Discover the inspiring journey of Ted Shirley, an author and former sniper, as he navigates life after service and tackles the challenges of PTSD.
Ted Shirley is a celebrated author and former British Army sniper.
His distinguished military career included two tours in Afghanistan.
Overcoming the battles of PTSD, he now shares his journey through writing.
The war in Afghanistan had grown to its most violent of times, and the Helmand Province, with its infamous green zone, had made for some of the bloodiest battles. With their departure to the front lines fast approaching, a Welsh infantry Battalion was in the process of selecting their very best men to be put forward for sniper selection in order to create a much-needed sniper platoon before their deployment. A rigorous six-month course in which every man would be pushed to their limits and, on completion, would change the course of their life forever. Ted was only 20 years old when he embarked on that life-changing journey, and by the time his 22nd birthday arrived, he had killed more men than he cared to remember. He had always been a bright-eyed, happy person who could light up a room, but he seemed to lose his way.
The young Welshmen grew to become the closest of friends as they navigated their way through the difficult sniper cadre, pushing each other to be the best they could be. After losing one of their own to the Taliban shortly after the course, Ted and the rest of the lads deploy to the Helmand Province and the raging war for the second time. Follow their journey as they take on the Taliban, from enemy snipers to Taliban commanders, the Welshmen rained terror upon their enemies. Deploying on the biggest air assault operation since WW2, making shots from a mile away, and even taking out two enemy fighters with one round. They were battle winners, and they earned their title of sniper, but it was not without cost.
As the tour in Afghanistan comes to a close, Ted begins to feel the effect of what will later be diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder, and it quickly takes over his life, sending him on a downward spiral. A humbling, terrifying experience which lasted for over a decade, and very nearly took his life. With an uninspiring diagnosis of a life sentence, Ted decides to take his life into his own hands and pursues what he is told to be a non-existent cure to his PTSD. From a love of music to travelling around the globe, spiritual guidance, to conventional therapies, hypnosis, to the forbidden world of alternative medicines.
Follow Ted as he tries to reclaim his life, and see inside a therapist's office and just how it all works, something that Ted wished was available to him at his lowest points. Just to be able to read a single story about not just surviving PTSD, but thriving after it could make the difference between life and death. Ted harnesses the lessons he learns from being a sniper and the never-give-up attitude it entails. Striving to never give up, even as friends take their own lives around him as a result of their trauma, he refuses to give in to his demons and will do anything it takes to defeat them. With detailed accounts of the unravelling of his mind and intricate insights into the taking of a life with the squeeze of a trigger, the book takes readers on the journey of a lifetime, with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Living a double life as he travels the world, Ted embodies the all-to-common trait in which somebody can seem perfectly happy, while internally they are in the darkest of places. Backpacking around the globe in search of happiness was never going to be the answer, but it made for one hell of a ride.
